Man: The Dwelling Place of God Paperback – May 21, 2009

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 1,788 ratings

Deep inside every man there is a private sanctum where dwells the mysterious essence of his being. The weakness of so many modern Christians is that they feel too much at home in the world. The most liberating declarations in the New Testament is this: The true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. From man's standpoint the most tragic loss suffered in the Fall was the vacating of this inner sanctum by the Spirit of God. At the far-in hidden center of man's being is a bush fitted to be the dwelling place of the Triune God. There God planned to rest and glow with moral and spiritual fire. Man by his sin forfeited this indescribably wonderful privilege and must now dwell there alone. For so intimately private is the place that no creature can intrude; no one can enter but Christ; and He will enter only by the invitation of faith.

Excellent, practical, biblical teaching that remains relevant today.

A few representative quotes from the book:

The man who is seriously convinced that he deserves to go to hell is not likely to go there, while the man who believes that he is worthy of heaven will certainly never enter that blessed place.

God offers life, but not an improved old life. The life He offers is life out of death. It stands always on the far side of the cross.

In the words of Augustine, “But Thou, O Lord, who ever livest, and in whom nothing dies, since before the world was, and, indeed, before all that can be called ‘before,’ Thou existest, and art the God and Lord of all creatures; and with Thee fixedly abide the causes of all unstable things and the changing sources of all things changeable, and the eternal reasons of all things reasoning and temporal.”

The man that believes will obey; failure to obey is convincing proof that there is not true faith present. To attempt the impossible God must give faith or there will be none, and He gives faith to the obedient heart only. Where real repentance is, there is obedience; for repentance is not only sorrow for past failures and sins, it is a determination to begin now to do the will of God as He reveals it to us.

The teaching of the Bible is that God is Himself the end for which man was created.

True faith brings a spiritual and moral transformation and an inward witness that can not be mistaken.
The purpose of Christ’s redeeming work was to make it possible for bad men to become good – deeply, radically and finally.

“O God, please give me three wounds; the wound of contrition and the wound of compassion and the wound of longing after God.” Then she added this little postscript which I think is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read: “This I ask without condition.”

“O God, that I might want Thee so badly that it becomes a wound in my heart that I can’t get over.”

God loves to be longed for, He loves to be sought, For He sought us Himself with such longing and love; He died for desire of us, marvellous thought! And He longs for us now to be with Him above.* (*Frederick W. Faber)

God puts immortality in all our loving efforts for Him and shares His eternity with all who love and trust Him.

Every Christian should master the Bible, or at least spend hours and days and years trying. And always he should read his Bible, as George Muller said, “with meditation.” After the Bible the next most valuable book for the Christian is a good hymnal. Let any young Christian spend a year prayerfully meditating on the hymns of Watts and Wesley alone and he will become a fine theologian. Then let him read a balanced diet of the Puritans and the Christian mystics. The results will be more wonderful than he could have dreamed.

The truly spiritual man is indeed something of an oddity. He lives not for himself but to promote the interests of Another. He seeks to persuade people to give all to his Lord and asks no portion or share for himself. He delights not to be honoured but to see his Saviour glorified in the eyes of men. His joy is to see his Lord promoted and himself neglected.

Tozer, once again, hits the Christian and his/her head pleading for them to wake up!
I have read this book more than once to help myself wake up from my own spiritual complacency.
His honest and sometimes harsh words speak Truth. Every Christian living in this day of luxury and proclaimed truths (small t) needs to be reminded that we should feel uncomfortable here because this is not our home.
A well-written sermon for the masses. Now, if only we would take it to heart after we shut the book.

using such beautiful language as to cause one to pause and drink it in; Tozer opens our eyes and our hearts to those things that we dare not think nor speak about .. Things that bring us to serious heart checking and reminding; We are not our own But Gods..

In this work Tozer discusses numerous topics. Each chapter contains nuggets of Truth to challenge, illuminate or encourage the believer to a deeper walk in their faith and relationship with the Lord Jesus.

"I long ago decided that I would rather know the truth than be happy in ignorance." ~ A.W. Tozer

A.W. Tozer had a powerful writing style that grips the heart and enlightens the mind. In this book Tozer covers deep theological concepts in an easily understood way. He talks soul to soul about things that really matter. Some of the questions he answers in this book include:

What is real faith?
Does God always answer prayer?
How do you love God?
How can you make rapid spiritual progress?

Tozer believed that the Bible was a supernatural book and can only be understood by supernatural aid. He believed that scientific knowledge cannot save your soul or give you eternal truth which is the answer to man's problems.

I found Tozer had some very serious considerations in regards to prayer. He defines the unregenerate and the regenerate and believed that to be a friend of the world was to be an enemy of God.

Yes, his words are sometimes shocking to the modern mind and yet there is deep truth there and spiritual food for the hungry soul. If you love Billy Graham or C.S. Lewis then you will probably enjoy this book. I was very encouraged by the content of this book and can recommend it to anyone who is a spiritual seeker looking for the truth.

Highly recommend, reminds us of our Christian journey, why we gave ourselves as living sacrifice to God, being dead to sin and living for Christ. Professing the Confession of our faith and holding up despite the opposition from the world.
Being true Christians regardless of what the world says, standing firm in our truth that Christ is the Son of God, He came to redeem us back to God, He is the only way to God and will return again. This world is not our home and we look forward to His glorious return.

It's a book to re-read over and over again.
