This proven systematic theology represents the very best in evangelical theology. Stanley Grenz presents the traditional themes of Christian doctrine -- God, humankind, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the church, and the last things--all within an emphasis on God's central program for creation, namely, the establishment of community. Masterfully blending biblical, historical, and contemporary concerns, Grenz's respected work provides a coherent vision of the faith that is both intellectually satisfying and expressible in Christian living. Available for the first time in paperback.

S. Grenz Systematic theology is written for the church. It is very well written and solid. The author is very well informed about systematic theology in general, little bit modern in some places. This systematic theology is not for beginners. If you are a beginner in systematic theology buy Wayne Grudem. S. Grenz is very biblical in writing his systematic theology. This theology is well balanced between Calvinism-Arminianism. Author does not go deep into the debates between two theological schools. Ecclesiology for S. Grenz is very important, so he wrote this book for the community of God. S. Grenz systematic theology is catholic and evangelical in heritage. Every serious student of theology must have a copy of this book and read it.

Grenz is one of the most prolific writers and thinkers of our times in terms of theology. There are certainly aspects which I, and all, will disagree with, but Grenz aims to open our eyes to a broader picture of scripture while not putting the theology of our forefathers away. This book walks through beautifully how the church and God relate to one another and how we understand His showy scriptures. This is a book worth adding to your collection of thoughts of theology.

Excellently expressed from the mind and learning of one of the best theologians. But, I bought the book because of a lunch meeting I had with Dr. Grenz a year or so before his death. His Christ-like graciousness and passion for the work was so evident, and so encouraging. It felt like I had known him for years.

This is definitely a text designed for the seminary. It doesn't leave a lot of room for understanding the other perspectives outside of social trinitarianism, calvinism, or the Reformed/Southern Baptist view at the time of this writing. Perhaps it is because this book was written at a time when North American Christians and Churches were attempting to make the gospel relevant, Grentz like others in the Trinity as Community camp may have overlayed anthropology onto their theology.
However, there ARE aspects of community within the Trinity and the church that are necessarily articulated well, especially as it relates to the work of the Holy Spirit in the community of faith and in individuals, and eschatology.
At times ecclessiology overpowers the christology, soteriology.

I purchased this book for a seminary course, and although it is academically written, it tackles a wide arrange of subjects. It begins with rudimentary subjects such as the trinity, so you need not be a seminary student to understand the subjects. It provides a variety of viewpoints as well for purposes of comparison.

Grenz does a superb job covering basic systematic theology while also weaving the theme of community/trinity throughout. The book is a wonderful resource for those wanting to grow deeper in their understanding of the most basic elements of the Christian faith. Easy to read, well researched and practical.

Provides an in-depth, non-technical, look at a number of theological subjects. Good reference for lay-persons as well as clergy. Using it as a supplement resource on study of the Trinity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but a bit scattered

Interesting systematic theology by Stanley Grenz. There's a lot to glean from this book, but also some odd choices, such as directly importing Hegel's definition of personhood without effectively integrating it into his method.
